The Gillett Farmers and Businessmen s Club met on Dec. 15 to finalize the plans for the 72nd annual Coon Supper set for Saturday, Jan. 10. As in past years, the Coon Supper will be held in the Gillett Elementary Gymnasium, located at 313 S. Sixth St. in Gillett. The doors will open and the meal will be served at 6 p.m. with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. The menu will stay the same as last year coon, baby-back ribs, brisket, rice,followed by senior high girls,cheap uggs, sweet potatoes and cake. Discussion was made regarding the acquisition of coons. So far they have acquired over 350 pounds for the dinner. The club is still working on signing up sponsors for the dinner. Scott Place,cheap ugg boots, head coon cooker, told the group that he is in the process of teaching Seth Place the fine art of cooking coon. Chad Philipp, president, also told the group that several of the members will be on KATV s Daybreak on Jan. 7 to discuss the coon supper, as well as, serve the Daybreak crew an advance taste of the dinner that will be served. The Gillett Farmers and Businessmen s Club is a non-profit and non-political club that has grown into an outstanding asset for the community of Gillett. The club helps with efforts such as summer programs, school programs, an educational endowment fund, athletic and scholastic awards and community service. For the past four years the club has awarded the Gillett Farmers and Businessmens Scholarship to two graduating seniors from the Gillett area. At present there are eight seniors from Gillett that will be recognized that will be graduating in 2015. Each student receives a $1,000 scholarship that is renewable for four years. The club continues to use all proceeds from the Coon Supper to fund these scholarships and will award two more scholarships to seniors graduating in 2015. These scholarships demonstrate the commitment that the Gillett Farmers and Businessmen s Club has for the students in the area. The Gillett Coon Supper is the first, and one of the largest events of its type, held at the beginning of each new year. The event will be attended by many national, state and local politicians, and people from all over Arkansas and surrounding states. Last year, we had more press than ever in the history of the coon supper,BROOMFIELD, Gillett Mayor Jared Holzhauer said. CNN was among the news organizations that was in attendance.
